From a giant turtle village to a town called Nowhere, a dragon friend to a pair of book-loving sharks, Let’s Go! A Kids Comics Studio Anthology is a genre-hopping, creature-filled, all-ages graphic novel packed with journeys of the imagination—and powered by community.
Let’s Go! is a fully creator-driven anthology crafted by members of Kids Comics Unite (KCU), an international network of graphic novel writers and artists launched yesterday afternoon on Kickstarter and funded overnight!
What sets Let’s Go! apart is not just its rich mix of fantasy, humor, adventure, and heart—but how it was made. It’s the result of a community of storytellers taking matters into their own hands to conceive, create, edit, design, publish and promote a book.
Leader of the marketing committee, Patrick Lugo, explains:
“Everyone who contributed to the anthology wasn’t just a storyteller—they were part of the publishing team. We are all learning together. Artists became editors. Authors joined the design team. It’s been a democratic, collaborative effort at every level, and the results promise to make for a rich experience for readers.”
Led by KCU founder and literary agent Janna Morishima, the project grew out of KCU’s Kids Comics Studio program, where creators work together to hone their craft and learn the business of publishing.
Surprised that a literary agent with a track record of traditional publishing success would welcome self-publishing and crowdfunding as paths to publication? Janna advocates a DIY ethos in today’s marketplace, saying:
“Traditional publishing is still an incredible path, but it’s getting more competitive every day. With Let’s Go!, we’re showing what’s possible when creators work together to realize their goals.”
Diverse Voices, Shared Vision
The 31 contributors hail from all over the world (the US, Canada, France, Australia, and Costa Rica) and represent authors and author-illustrators with all levels of experience, from debut to seasoned.
The stories range in tone and genre but share a common theme, based on a quote from writer Tim Cahill:
“A journey is best measured in friends rather than miles.”
This shared theme allows readers to meet a wide cast of characters and explore fantastical worlds while also connecting with relatable emotions—ideal for kids just starting to navigate their own adventures.
